Cartography - GIS Mapping

at the

Division of Geography

University of Sydney

Cartographic Section
Madsen Building
Level 4 Room 433

The Cartography Section consists of a Cartography-GIS computer mapping laboratory and an extensive map collection.
Using up-to-date mapping techniques, the principle role of the section is to prepare maps, diagrams and illustriations for teaching, research and for academic puplications. Similar work is also undertaken on a fee-for-service basis for commercial clients. The staff provides demonstrations on computer graphic programs to students and interested groups, and advises and assists with map collection enquiries from students, academics and the public.

Practical computer cartography with theoretical and substantial technical knowledge and procedures is taught to undergraduate honour students as well as postgraduate students associated with geography majors. The computer graphics developed in the division is well advanced, when compared to those systems available in cartography units in other Australian Universities.

By keeping pace with progress in computer technology, the geography division students and staff have an excellent resource to pursue their studies and research interests. Funds generated  from commercial work enables the staff to maintain currency of the equipment and to continue professional development, including the attendence at mapping related conferences and seminars.

The Cartography Section has an affliation with University of Technology Karlsruhe and Munich, offering cartography students six months occupational training. To date eleven students have participated in the program.
