MAP COLLECTION (Value $1.5 million):

Approximately 80,000 maps hung vertically in the MULTIPLAN filing system. Visual index system using the Bogg & Lewis cataloguing system. Maps were last catalogued in 1978 in printed book form. It is valued at $1,5 million.
The catalogued needs to be computerised in a database from manual records. Since 1980, complimentary maps have not been received from Australian government mapping organisations. The University and the Division have not provided any funds for the acquisition of mapping products since this time and therefore the map collection is very much out of date.
Users are academics from within the University plus some private people and organisations as well as student groups from Geography, Geology, Anthropology, Engineering, Architecture, Agriculture, Marine Sciences, Soil Sciences, History and Ocean Sciences.
Both Peter Johnson and myself answer enquires and both file maps as well as minor repairs when absolutely necessary. The amount of time in the Map Collection amounts to 5%-10% of each of our time, we have at least 3 - 6 visitors each day.
